Club League race 5 – CP, Enfield Circuit: Hilltop Finish

So, Round-5 of the club league saw everyone return to the village of Rathcore, and our hosts in Boggins Pub once again.

However, this time we had a sting-in-the-tail with a 500m climb up to the finish line just outside the village, just to push the heart rates up a little!

We had a total of 28 riders competing in the race, with visitors from Donadea, Bikeworx, 905, Trim, and Clane all taking part and helping to make the racing all the more interesting and exciting.

First group away was young Justin Harris along with Margaret Burke, and were being chased by Colm and Enda Flynn and Raymond Allen in the next group.

The middle group was the one to watch this evening, with the winner (and all the top placings) going to this group as they worked very hard to beat their ‘expected’ average speeds and swept up the front groups on the run in to the finish.

Under pressure behind this group were the young Leech brothers – ones to watch for the future!! – they were working hard along with Colm Maye, and Declan Weldon who was testing out his new bike, but were caught on the last lap by semi-scratch who themselves were under pressure from the fear of being swept up by the ever powerful scratch group.

Semi-Scratch split on the last lap, such was the pressure to stay clear, and joined forces with Declan/Colm/Ciaran/Conor to charge in the road, just about staying clear of a now weakened scratch group, and to just finish in behind the strong mid group who had literally just crossed the line to take the win.
Scratch didn’t manage to bridge the gap to any of the front groups tonight, but put in a huge effort to close the gap down to less than a minute – great effort considering they were two men short, and also lost Luke to illness on the first lap.

So the winner on the night was a total newcomer to road racing, and on his first ever race – young Dillon Ryan from Clane Co.Kildare put in a great effort and kicked hard on the hill up to the finish to take the honours from the climbing duo of Quintana/Contador sorry, Michael and Jamie coming in just behind in 2nd and 3rd.  The mountain goats were followed in then by the power-houses of Enda Munnelly, John Harris and Paul Kavanagh.

So, with just two rounds left and 6 out of the top 10 riders in the league overall yet to marshal, the league is still wide open with 12 points between 1st and 10th place.
The league table can be found on the main league page HERE.

Here are the results for the night:

Many thanks to everyone who helped out with Sandra and Ed organising.  All the marshals and lead/following cars did a superb job, and everyone felt very safe on the circuit.  Thanks also to the great Michelle Kavanagh for the photos.

Round 6 of the league will take place on 24th July, on the Kinnegad Circuit, with a (slightly) uphill finish.

==============  P R E   R A C E   I N F O R M A T I O N   ==================
Round 5 of the 2014 league takes place on Thursday 3rd of July, starting from Rathcore Village and using the same circuit that we used in round 2 – however this time for the finish line, we will TURN RIGHT in the village and finish up at the top of the hill (see below).

Sign-On and Parking are at the pub in the centre of the village – please arrive early to ensure we get everyone signed on and allocated to their groups, sort all the handicaps, and assign marshals to their posts etc.
Sign-On will close at 18:45hrs.

As we have 4 races completed now, the ‘best 4 results’ rule will kick in now for anyone that has not yet marshaled or missed a race!

Don’t forget that EVERYONE MUST MARSHAL ONE RACE!!!  There are only 3 races left, so if you are not on the Rota, but are taking part in the races, please contact the club email address (info@clonardroadclub.com) as you risk having your highest points deducted if you fail to marshal – anyone under 16 years old obviously cannot marshal, but if your parents can lend a hand on the night, this will be fine, but please let us know so that we aren’t short on the any night.
COURSE DETAILS:

The race will use the same course as Round-2 of the Club League, however this time we will make a right turn in the village (see below) to finish at the top of the hill (approx 500m from the village).

So, the race will be 3 full laps of the course – each lap is approx 10km long, with the finish on top of the hill after the right turn marked in the picture above.

Directions to the start can be found on the Round-2 race page if you are not familiar with the area.

Please also check with the Marshalling rota in case you are scheduled to marshal this race.
!! Don’t forget that a penalty applies if you haven’t marshalled a race !!
