BALLINROBE 2-DAY 2015

A decade since the inaugural Ballinrobe 2-Day, Western Lakes C.C. have set out to attract the best possible field of riders for 2015 with riders from all over  Ireland and abroad taking part. Bike racing action kicks off on Saturday 8th August with a strong man’s stage over rolling hills,  concluding on Sunday 9th with two stages a morning TT following by afternoon road race.

Western Lakes are also organising one hell of a curtain raiser in Claremorris on Friday 7thAugust in the form of the National Criterium Championships. An ambitions weekend of events for a small West of Ireland club. Annually striving to cater for as large a cross section of cyclists as possible from A3 to A+ including Ladies, Juniors and Vets while providing an interesting and competitive race the promoting club and the event Directors have decided a revision of the stage parcours was needed for 2015.This coupled with feedback from last years race participants and those who may have shied away from the event sees the return of some old route favourites this year. The organisers feel such an approach is important for the progress and evolution of the event and road racing in the West.

There will be mass starts for the two road stages again this year

Stage 1 leaving the Cycling Centre at 3:00PM on Saturday 8th should be a little more relaxed this year as directors have swapped the Category 1 ascent of Lally’s Mountain for a flat section with the first ramp not arriving until just over 40KM in with an uncategorised ramp at Maire Luke’s Pub. The race will then head for the first climb a Category 3 at Capnacreacha 45KM in where the ‘mountain goats’ will get a chance to flex their legs. Good racing from an aggressive bunch may not allow them to have it all their own way here as its only 1 kilometre in length and very gradual Capnacreacha should not be a decisive climb. Nor is the next one of the Cat 2 at Maamtrasna however the Category 1 climb of Ail Dubh may see a decisive move go away and stick to the end.

To the relief of the ‘the powerhouses’ Stage 2A sees the return of the TT from the GAA grounds in Kilmaine finishing at the Cycling Centre, Ballinrobe just 7.4K later . A race of truth but is it really compared to last year leg burner up Lally’s mountain? This stage may shake thinks up a little but will hopefully keep a large proportion of the field well in the mix and fighting tooth and nail throughout Stage 2B. The latest aerodynamic equipment will be on show for this stage. Although one or two from the host club have been know to set some very impressive times using road bikes on the course occasionally beating those with the full TT kit.

Stage 2B in the afternoon may not be just a formality. With the previous days climbing and the morning’s tester in the legs this stage will see who has made the most of their recovery. The stage is the same as that used in 2014 apart from the finish being on the Kilmaine Road instead of the town centre. The first 50KM will see riders tackle some undulating terrain encompassing Clonbur, Cloughbrack, Corrnamona and the outskirts of Cong. Following the previous days route the two climbs on this stage will be mere pimples! After 50KM the race returns to a flat circuit format for the finale. Riders will pass through the finish line three times before the finish with Primes to be had on some of the laps.

The race has all the frills with jerseys, Yellow (Overall) Green (Sprints) and Polkadot   (Mountains) plus 4 perpetual trophies and cups for stage and overall winners. A2 and A3 leader’s jerseys along with prizes for the Most Aggressive Rider each day should keep the racing interesting and lively on the road throughout the weekend.
